The Shiksa Picks – Tori’s Favorite Finds on the Web 10.28.11

Every Friday, I take my favorite “picks” from my week on the web and post them here for you to enjoy. But first, here is a quick recap of this week’s posts on TheShiksa.com–
just in case you missed them.  :)

THIS WEEK ON THESHIKSA.COM

COFFEE CAKE CUPCAKES

Need an excuse to eat cake for breakfast? Take a cue from Bill Cosby and start your day with cake!

PERSIAN LAMB STEW

This simple Middle Eastern dish has only ten ingredients, including a healthy dose of turmeric. The tender meat flakes with a fork and melts in your mouth. Amazing flavor!

THE SHIKSA’S WEEKLY WEB PICKS

Here are some of my favorite picks from the web this week.

COOKING ON THE WEEKENDS: BRÛLÉED PORT WINE POACHED PEARS

Fellow LA food blogger Valentina posted this gorgeous technique for poaching pears in port wine. Totally luscious. I want to hang her photos on my wall. Exquisite!

IDLEWIFE: GREEK MUSHROOM PIE

So technically this isn’t a recipe– it’s more like a rough guide– but the whole concept sounds so tasty that I had to share it. Puff pastry, mushrooms, cheese, pepper and lots of cream. What could be bad?

SEVIMEL: PUMPKIN CHURROS WITH CINNAMON CHOCOLATE SAUCE

I found this recipe via Tastespotting– wow! Pumpkin churros with ooey gooey cinnamon chocolate sauce?? Now there’s a creative seasonal concept!

MONTREAL GAZETTE: RECIPES COLLECTED FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE

Read all about The Ghost Whisperer’s Cookbook. Yes, that Ghost Whisperer! Not the girl who plays her on TV, but the real one. The one that the TV show is based on. Includes a ghostly recipe for Queenie’s Malted Butterscotch Bars. Try not to be scared. It’s only dessert.

COMMENT OF THE WEEK

This comment came in on Facebook from blogger Kim from Cravings of a Lunatic
on my Coffee Cake Cupcakes blog:

I run around singing “The Shiksa’s” great every day. I was talking shop with some man in the Costco line today. We were talking olive oils and recipes and I told him to go check you out. So if some older gentleman stops by and says something weird about Costco, yah that was me. Great recipe Tori. This looks so moist and tasty. A must try. My hubs would go nuts for this one. If there are glaring spelling mistakes I blame the puppy, she keeps biting my toes while I type. Desperately need a puppy intervention.

Best comment of the week. No contest. She never fails to make me laugh. Love ya, Kim!

Shabbat Shalom! Have a delicious, spooky, safe and wonderful weekend.

Aw, thanks for the shout out Tori. I try so hard to be serious too. I mean really I do. I try and try, *gets distracted by something shiny* what, where was I? I love everything you did this week. And I cannot wait to go check out those pears. Everything looks good but those pears are calling to me. Love ya too doll! xx

What a hoot! I put together a cookbook for all the gals in our family of recipes collected over 100 years, I would dearly have loved to chat with Aunt Alice and Doty about a couple of their contributions, I wonder if they were on the other side wishing they could clue me in on some of the questions I had. I wish my granny could have schooled me on that gravy I stink at even with her recipe.
