The Shiksa Picks – Tori’s Favorite Finds on the Web 7.22.11

Every Friday, I take my favorite “picks” from my week on the web and post them here for you to enjoy. But before I announce The Shiksa Picks, here is a quick recap of this week’s posts on TheShiksa.com– just in case you missed them.  :)

THIS WEEK ON THESHIKSA.COM

MARINATED HEIRLOOM TOMATO SALAD

Learn the history of heirloom vegetables (Thomas Jefferson was a fan!), then try my simple recipe for Marinated Heirloom Tomato Salad. Tastes like summer!

IMA BURGERS

These mini grilled Sephardic-spiced burgers are seasoned with fresh herbs and topped with spicy sriracha mayonnaise. Easy to make and loaded with flavor!

THE SHIKSA’S WEEKLY WEB PICKS

Here are some of my favorite picks from the web this week.

EMINE’S BAKLAVA

Ilke is a Turkish girl cooking it up in the American south– cool, right? Her grandma’s recipe for authentic Turkish baklava made my mouth water! (warning – may cause sugar coma!) This is one of my favorite food blogs, I’m excited to share it with you!

AUBERGINES WITH BUTTERMILK SAUCE

I spotted these beautiful vegetarian Aubergines (eggplant) with Buttermilk Sauce on the Eat Little Bird blog. What a tasty and unique idea! Could be a fun option for Meatless Monday or a dairy Shavuot meal.

BAKED MOZZARELLA BITES

Those of you who are trying to lose weight (and who isn’t these days??) will love Kelly’s blog Eat Yourself Skinny. These panko-breaded Baked Mozzarella Bites look delicious, and they’re so easy to make. I can’t wait to try them! Kelly gives detailed calorie breakdowns for each recipe, so it’s easy to know how much you can indulge in without going overboard. Plus she’s totally adorable, and so is her Yorkie dog Oliver. What’s not to love? :)

INTO PISTACHIO COUNTRY, IN SOUTHEASTERN TURKEY

To go along with Ilke’s Turkish baklava, Seth Kugel (love his name!), the New York Times “Frugal Traveler,” wrote a great post about pistachios, baklava, and other pistachio-laden treats in Southeastern Turkey.

HOW TO MAKE A WALL-MOUNTED MAGNETIC SPICE RACK

This article on TheKitchn.com caught my eye. I’m in desperate need of spice reorganization. This might just be the perfect solution! Now if I could just find somebody handy to help me out with that… One of these days I’ll have to get into a DIY mood and get down and dirty with magnetic spice bottles!

TWITTER SHOUT-OUTS

Every week, I post the Twitter accounts that make me smile with their
fun or interesting tweets. Here are this week’s picks…

@ylove

…he’s an Orthodox Jewish MC who produces hip hop music with a positive, inclusive message. His music is seriously amazing– it’s all about peace, love, and unity. Plus it makes me want to dance. Follow him!

@Glutton_In_LA

…I heart this girl. She’s a Jewish food writer who is all about the Los Angeles restaurant scene. Give her a follow. Nuff said.

@linzlovesyou

…for her witty tweets and fab social networking skills. You go girl!

COMMENT OF THE WEEK

I have two favorite comments this week! The first came in from Chef Tonne on Facebook when I posted a picture for Spicy Chickpea Panko Patties (recipe will post in a couple of weeks):

Shalom my sista….CANNOT wait will be making these for ramadan!

Shalom indeed! It makes my heart so happy to know that my recipes are being enjoyed by people from many different backgrounds and walks of life. Wishing you peace and happiness on Ramadan, Chef Tonne!

The second comment came in from blog reader Esther on an older post called Marley Ate My Birthday Cake. I laughed so hard I choked on my drink.

After taking a home-made 7 lb Corned Beef out of the liquid and setting it far back on the counter, I had to pick the kids up at the pool. A 10 minute trip. Needless to say, the beef was gone, the 100 lb shepard/husky mix was found in the corner looking mighty uncomfortable and she went by the name “Corned Beef eating B—h!”

Naughty, naughty pup! But can you blame her? I mean, homemade corned beef! That’s some serious temptation. ;)

COMMENT AND SHARE

Did you read an article this week that you think my readers would find interesting? Are you a food blogger with a recipe that you want everybody see? Or maybe you want to share what’s cooking in your kitchen this weekend. Comment below and let us know about it!

Shabbat Shalom! Have a delicious weekend.

  1. Ilke says:

    Hi Tori!
    What a great surprise to be this week’s pick :) Thank you very much! Yes, your recipes are shared by many from different backgrounds, in this Southern Carolinian-Turkish household as well :)
    Have a great weekend as well, love, Ilke

  2. Ann says:

    I know I say this almost every week….but another great week! I would have been frustrated if my dog ate the corned beef, but – OH BOY that was funny! Of course, I would have been amazed, considering the corned beef weighs more than my dog!

  3. kristy says:

    I am in love with that spice rack idea! And the mozzarella bites. :)

  4. Kelly says:

    Awww Tori how absolutely sweet of you!! I can’t believe I just now saw this, you are such a sweetheart! Checking out those other fabulous blogs now as well! xoxo
